Les vitraux sont un patrimoine fragile, mince paroi de verre et de plomb qui clôt les baies des nombreux édifices civils et religieux depuis le Haut Moyen Âge. Leur fragilité, qui les soumet, sans grande défense, aux intempéries, à la pollution, parfois au vandalisme, a de tout temps nécessité des interventions régulières d’entretien, de réparation, de restauration, souvent de remplacement. Au-delà des opérations spectaculaires de restauration où l’on applique les techniques les plus avancées de nettoyage ou de protection, les interventions plus modestes de simple entretien, de soins de base, méritent attention, car elles ont un rôle fondamental dans la préservation à long terme des verrières anciennes et modernes. Au temps où la crise économique touche de nombreux pays, il est opportun de réfléchir à une approche de conservation qui s’adapte, dans les meilleures conditions pour les oeuvres, à de nouvelles contraintes financières.
C’est pourquoi, le 9 Forum sur la conservation et la technologie du vitrail, organisé par le Comité scientifique international pour la conservation des vitraux, ICOMOS France et le Laboratoire de recherche des monuments historiques, aura pour thème principal : L’entretien des vitraux, comment prendre soin d’un patrimoine fragile ?

Stained-glass : how to take care of a fragile heritage? 8-10 July 2015, Paris

Stained-glass is a fragile cultural heritage, a thin wall made of glass and lead that closes the windows of many civil and religious buildings from the early Middle Ages onwards. Its fragility makes it very sensitive to weathering, pollution and sometimes vandalism, so that interventions arising out of regular maintenance, repair, restoration and often replacement have always been required. Beyond spectacular restoration projects where the most advanced techniques of cleaning and protection are used, smaller interventions such as simple maintenance deserve attention, fulfilling a fundamental role in the long-term préservation of ancient and modern windows. At a time when economic crisis affects many countries, it is timely to consider a conservation approach that meets the best interests of the artifact, while addressing new financial pressures.
Therefore, the 9th Forum for the Conservation of stained-glass windows, organized by the International Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Stained Glass, ICOMOS France and the Laboratoire de recherche des monuments historiques focuses mainly on: the maintenance of stained-glass, how to take care of a fragile heritage?
